Some artworks are admired.
Some become famous.
The Mona Lisa became a legend.
Painted more than 500 years ago by the brilliant Leonardo da Vinci, the Mona Lisa is one of the most recognized images ever created. Her calm, quiet, slightly mischievous smile has fascinated the world for centuries.
Today she hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris, where millions of visitors come every year just to see her.
But part of the Mona Lisa’s fame comes from an incredible story.
In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a museum worker named Vincenzo Peruggia. He hid inside the museum overnight, removed the painting from the wall, and walked out with it hidden under his coat.
For more than two years, the Mona Lisa was missing. Newspapers around the world reported on the mystery, and the search for the painting turned it into the most talked-about artwork on the planet.
In 1913, Peruggia tried to sell the painting in Florence, Italy. Authorities were alerted, the Mona Lisa was recovered, and she was safely returned to the Louvre.
The theft made the painting even more famous, transforming it from a great artwork into a global icon.
For Mr Brainwash, the Mona Lisa represents the power of art to capture the imagination of the entire world. By reimagining this timeless image in his colorful and playful style, he brings new life to a face that has inspired generations.
Here on Rodeo Drive, the Mona Lisa steps out of the museum and into the city.
